Love those real-deal compound eyes! And that proboscis looks… incredibly painful. Caterpillars are already the only larvae most people seem to care about, but where’s the respect for the little baby janitors who clean up so much of the nastiness we don’t want?īut these maggots don’t just turn into any flies, they turn into big poofy mosquitoes! Real mosquito larvae are actually aquatic and don’t look much like a maggot at all, but that’s okay because here we get two iconic dipteran stages for the price of one. And I feel like that’s something you don’t see enough of in the media. Like the simple, featureless blobbiness of a bee larva, now with big, glowy, hypno-eyes, always a wonderful feature! But these are no bees, these are grade A, bona fide maggots. LARVA! I love a larva! And these larvae are simply flawless. The creativity of Super Mario Land 2, on a grand 3D scale, and even allowing us to play as weird Mario enemies?! Amazing! Of course, one of the great things about Super Mario Land 2 is all the bugs. I think it might be the best game I’ve ever played. Odyssey is… dang, it’s just the mosquito’s knees. We’re finally (truly) covering Odyssey, ya see! And not only that, with a BUG! Oh my goodness! Why are these guys trying to eat you? Are they just mean? Or is their digestive system all clogged up by snow? They don’t damage you until the bite, for reference! Usually I do not question the digestive processes of video game enemies. However, there’s one particularly baffling thing about Bitefrost.
This is even used for a few platforming challenges in the game! Neat! You can see their shadows in the snow, and if you’re standing over one, it’ll pop out of the snow and try to chomp down on you! However, you can avoid the bite with a well-timed jump, and even use them to get to higher locations. These guys appear in the Snow Kingdom mostly, but a few are also found in one room in the Luncheon Kingdom. I’m trying to think of examples other than Bitefrost, but the only one I can think of right now is Maws from Splatoon 2, who might be even more obscure.Īh well, Bitefrost is still fantastic either way. You know a design trait I always love? The kind of enemy that hides under the surface, only to emerge in an attempt to swallow you whole.
